What We're Hearing

1/21/07

- Our people with the Lions are telling us that while everyone's quick to put Brady Quinn in at the #2 spot, the team really likes both Arkansas defensive end Jamaal Anderson and Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas.

- In something of a surprise two teams we spoke to about South Carolina athlete Syvelle Newton have told us that they actually prefer him as a free safety.

- What ultimately sent Colt Brennan back to Hawaii?  We're hearing that he likely wouldn't have come off the board before the third round.

- We're being told that the first small school defensive back (or player in general) to be selected will almost certainly be Hampton cornerback Travarous Bain, potentially in the second round.

- With Samardzija now playing baseball fulltime, the consensus appears to be that Dwayne Bowe (LSU) is the top senior wide receiver in this class, and by a good margin.

1/20/07

- Look for Arkansas' former top recruit quarterback Mitch Mustain to end up at Tulsa.

- When we eventually did veer back to the 2007 defensive end class, we learned that right now there's a three way race for the #1 defensive end spot with Jamaal Anderson (Arkansas) and Gaines Adams (Clemson) the leaders, with Charles Johnson (Georgia) still in the race.

- While bigger tends to be better, we've been told that Nebraska's Adam Carriker and Hawaii's Ikaika Alama-Francis would be better off dropping some weight in order to regain a bit more quickness.

- When we spoke to a scout for a team in the AFC West about this year's strong defensive end class, he couldn't help but keep talking about how strong the 2009 class looks with players like Miami FL's Calais Campbell, Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, Florida's Derrick Harvey, LSU's Tyson Jackson, Illinois's Derek Walker, USC's Kyle Moore, Marshall's Albert McClellan, Minnesota's Ray Henderson and Arkansas' Antwain Robinson.  He went on to say that it could be "A class for the ages".

- we've been told that we can expect a team to select Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija late in the draft in order to maintain his rights should baseball not work out.

- You want a couple hot names right now?  Jacoby Jones of Lane College and Zak DeOssie of Brown.
DeOssie is a 6'4" 250 linebacker from Brown who can play inside or out, right now there appears to be two to three AFC teams very interested in him.  Don't be surprised to see him come off the board in round three.
Jones tooks home the SIAC Offensive Player of the Year award as well as being named SIAC MVP.  Listed at 6'4" 210 pounds, Jones is also a valuable returnman.  Don't be surprised to see him selected very last day one, early day two.

- From everything we hear, rumors of Ted Ginn Jr. wanting to move back to cornerback are just that.
