Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and 40 time)?
Tyler Larsen: I am 6’4 ¾, 315 and my forty time is around a 5.1 or a 5.2.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Tyler Larsen: Weber State, Southern Utah, Hawaii, Utah and Utah State.
Alex Khvatov: What made you choose Utah State?
Tyler Larsen: Coach Alex Gerke recruited me. He was at Hawaii before. Then he came in and joined Coach Andersen’s staff at Utah State. It was a good fit.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your career at Utah State.
Tyler Larsen: I have been a starter for 38 straight games. It has been a great ride. This program was winning two or three games the first two years. But we kept getting better. We went 7-6 during my redshirt sophomore year. Last year, we went 11-2. The program has grown. It has been great.
Alex Khvatov: You won the WAC conference last season, tell us about that experience.
Tyler Larsen: It is the greatest feeling. We won the conference. It has been our goal every year since I have been here. We knew that we would be leaving the WAC. To win it during our last year was an amazing feeling.
Alex Khvatov: What will you miss the most about your former head coach Gary Andersen?
Tyler Larsen: We will miss him a lot. He was like a father figure to all of us. It is hard to replace that type of relationship. Coach Wells is trying to fill that place. We lost a great coach, but we got a great coach in return
Alex Khvatov: Is there a lot of excitement right now as you enter the Mountain West Conference?
Tyler Larsen: There is a lot of excitement. Once again, we join teams like Nevada, Hawaii and Fresno State in the MWC that left the WAC a year earlier. We will bring back those rivalries with those teams. There are better players in this conference. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
Alex Khvatov: What did you learn about your team after spring practice?
Tyler Larsen: I think that we have the most leadership that we ever had here. We have a lot of seniors and juniors that are leaders. We are not taking any excuses. We will get the best from everyone.
Alex Khvatov: What are your early impressions about the new coaching staff?
Tyler Larsen: We have more laid back coaches now. There is a big trust amongst us. We have a lot of returning starters. It is a working progress. We all need to get on the same page. The staff is more laid back. The offensive and defensive ways are a little different.
Alex Khvatov: What are your team and individual goals for this upcoming senior season?
Tyler Larsen: Team goal is win the MWC Championship. We want to get to the BCS Bowl. We want to be a better team than last year. An individual goal of mine is to win the Rimington Award. I have been on the Rimington watch list the last two years. It is a big motivation. I also want to be an All-American.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths on the football field?
Tyler Larsen: I have a good feel of defenses and their tendencies. I am usually good at picking up blitzes and changing blocking schemes. I am pretty good at pass blocking. I give the QB time to throw. But I can always make improvements in that area. Run blocking is my biggest strength.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game do you need to improve upon?
Tyler Larsen: I need to clean up my pad level. I think that I play too high at times. I get beat when I play high.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career so far?
Tyler Larsen: I actually have two. My redshirt sophomore year in Hawaii, we were losing by 28 points at halftime. We lost our starting QB to an injury. We had a 1-5 overall record at the time. We came out in the second half and won the game. We have been on a roll ever since. We have won every conference game since then. Another one was when we played against Utah last year. I had a chance to go against DT Star Lotulelei. He was the No.1 tackle in the nation. I did a good job against him. We won that game. It was a great feeling to win against a state rival.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Tyler Larsen: I know that it sounds bad, but I don’t have a favorite team. I love to watch football. My wife loves the Vikings, so I root for them.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Tyler Larsen: I loved watching Warren Sapp. He was a beast. He would take down all of the offensive linemen. I never saw a guy play like he did.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about playing football?
Tyler Larsen: I love the camaraderie amongst everyone on the team. I have a special connection with four other guys on the line on and off the field. I love that. It is a chess game out there. You make adjustments throughout the game. You give it your all. You give a lot of hard effort on the field.
Alex Khvatov: Your older brother Cody Larsen is currently participating at Ravens training camp, what has he told you about that experience?
Tyler Larsen: It is hard to get a hold of each other because there is a two-hour time difference. When I get done with my day, he is already in bed. He says that it is exhausting physically and mentally. He is one of the toughest guys that I know.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your teammate QB Chuckie Keeton.
Tyler Larsen: Chuckie is a great guy. He is always ready to play. He has great leadership. He has confidence when he is walking onto the field. He showed that confidence during the first game against Auburn. He is a leader. He is intelligent. He makes crazy plays. He makes people miss. He jukes them. I love blocking for that guy. He appreciates the offensive line.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Tyler Larsen: I like riding horses. I like to go hiking, fishing and skiing sometimes. I like to go and see a movie with my wife. We are newlyweds. We have been married for three months.
Alex Khvatov: What do you plan to do with your life after football?
Tyler Larsen: Honestly, I want to stay in football. I want to be a coach.
Alex Khvatov: Finish the sentence, Tyler Larsen is….
Tyler Larsen: I am a very respectable guy. I am competitive and loyal to anyone around me. I am a great guy.
