Alex Khvatov: What
are your measurements (height, weight, forty time and bench
press)?
Philip Wheeler: I measured at 6'2€, 240
pounds, ran a 4.62 forty, had a 36 inch vertical jump and did 25
reps.
Alex Khvatov: Why
did you choose Georgia Tech coming out of high school?
Philip Wheeler:
Because it was closer to home since I was from Columbus,
Georgia. Mainly I liked the Atlanta area. Academically, it is
a very good school and that is important to me. My major is
business management and I am 16 credits short of graduating.
Alex Khvatov: Tell
me about your overall experience at the Scouting Combine.
Philip Wheeler:
I was working out and showing the scouts what I can do.
I am sure that someone worked out better than me, but I am also
sure that my game film showed a lot more to them. The interview
process was kind of cool.
Alex Khvatov: Did
you get a chance to bond with a player from another team at the
Combine?
Philip Wheeler:
Not really. Everyone had a different schedule. Players
were together only when we worked out.
Alex Khvatov:
What was the most unique question that you had to answer during
the interview process?
Philip Wheeler:
Somebody asked me if I have ever worn women's clothes.
Alex Khvatov: Tell
me about your teammate, linebacker Gary Guyton?
Philip Wheeler:
As a person, he is an outgoing and cool guy. On the
field, he is a good player. The best thing about him is his
athleticism. He jumps high and has good hands. He is going to
be a good pro because I think that he will grow into the
position.
Alex Khvatov:
Describe your former teammate RB Tashard Choice?
Philip Wheeler:
He excelled during games. I think that he will be a
leader at the next level. He talks a lot and motivates people.
He is an all-around player. He will probably win a Championship
very early on in his career.
Alex Khvatov: What
was it like playing for your defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta?
Philip Wheeler:
I learned a lot from him. He is one of the best in the
business. He is an aggressive person. He just knows a lot
about the game. I hope that it will give me an advantage coming
into the NFL. I know so much about the game, and we used the
same language that a lot of teams use in the pros.
Alex Khvatov: What
is your favorite NFL team?
Philip Wheeler:
My favorite team is the Ravens. My former teammate Dawan
Landry plays for them. There is Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. I liked
Tony Siragusa when he played for them awhile back.
Alex Khvatov: Who
is your favorite player?
Philip Wheeler:
I like Ray Lewis. He makes a lot of plays. He is all
over the field.
Alex Khvatov: What
are your strengths on the football field?
Philip Wheeler:
My quickness and my athletic ability. I am able to read
schemes and blocks. I know a lot about the game.
Alex Khvatov: What
areas of your game do you need to improve upon?
Philip Wheeler:
Really just shedding blocks better. I am able to deliver
the blow, but I need to do a better job at shedding blocks.
Alex Khvatov:
Which scheme and what LB position are you most comfortable with?
Philip Wheeler:
I can play in either the 4-3 or the 3-4 scheme. I can
play in a complicated defense because I am used to it. I have
played all three linebacker positions. I feel more confident as
a middle linebacker because I have played it the last two
seasons. But I can play any position in the NFL.
Alex Khvatov: Who
is the toughest player that you have faced during your career?
Philip Wheeler:
Probably Pat White. We played them one time. He was
tough. He carried his team in that game. He was a big time
player. It was tough to contain him and he threw pretty good
during that game.
Alex Khvatov:
Which underclassman on your team should we keep an eye on in the
future?
Philip Wheeler:
Probably cornerback Morgan Burnett. He is a great DB.
He is fast and he has great hands. He made big plays for us as
a true freshman.
Alex Khvatov: What
do you enjoy most about playing football?
Philip Wheeler:
Just the fact that you can hit somebody. There is a lot
of chaos out there on the football field. Football proves that
the world still likes the tough guy. I am definitely a tough
player.
Alex Khvatov:
Where do you think that you are going to go?
Philip Wheeler:
Hopefully second round or better. I have gotten some
good impressions from teams.
Alex Khvatov: When
did you realize that you can play in the NFL?
Philip Wheeler:
I have always wanted to play in the NFL. I was pretty
much better than all of the other kids in middle school. I
played DE, WR and LB in high school. But I think that I fit
well at linebacker.
Alex Khvatov: What
separates you from all of the other players at your position?
Philip Wheeler:
My knowledge of the game and my athleticism. Some guys
might have the knowledge, but not the athleticism or it is the
other way around. My combination separates me from a lot of the
players.
Alex Khvatov: What
other sports did you play in high school?
Philip Wheeler:
I played basketball, baseball and I ran track. I was
pretty good.
Alex Khvatov: Give
me a scouting report on yourself as a basketball player?
Philip Wheeler:
As a basketball player, I played on the wing. I excelled
at being a cutter. I was good at cutting and finishing near the
basket. I was mainly a slasher. I had an OK jumper. I could
dunk pretty well.
Alex Khvatov: What
is the one thing in your daily life that you can't live without?
Philip Wheeler:
Just food, a lot of fried food and pizza. I miss it
because I haven't eaten any of that food since I started
training for the Combine.
Alex Khvatov: Tell
me something about yourself that makes you unique?
Philip Wheeler:
I think that mainly I am a well rounded athlete. I excel
at everything.
Alex Khvatov: What
do you like to do away from the football field?
Philip Wheeler:
Naturally I am an athlete. I like to play basketball. I
like to play Xbox and Playstation. I play Call of Duty, Madden
and NBA 2 K8. I play with the Ravens most of the time at
Madden.
Alex Khvatov:
Finish the sentence, Philip Wheeler is:..
Philip Wheeler:
I am a well rounded athlete. I have the passion for
athletics. I am a low key person that likes to have fun.
