Alex Khvatov:
What is your accurate height, weight and forty time?
Mark Parson:
I am 5'10" 195, and last
time I ran a 4.44 on field turf.
Alex Khvatov:
Coming out of high school in Virginia, what schools showed
interest in you during the recruiting process?
Mark Parson:
Well, UNC and East Carolina
showed interest in me. I thought I was going to go to UNC, but
they picked up our other corner from my team who ran a 4.31. I
was disappointed at the time. Basically, all of the MAC schools
showed interest in me. I thought I was also going to play
running back, but I switched to corner in college.
Alex Khvatov:
What made you choose Ohio?
Mark Parson:
Well, the biggest factor was
Taj Henley who was a senior middle linebacker this year. He
went to Fork Union Military Academy and was from my hometown in
Richmond, Virginia. He was a really cool guy and he treated me
like a younger brother. It was also a great atmosphere here,
and the coaches really care about their players. This is the
best opportunity for me. Coach Brown is one of the best
defensive backs coaches in the country. He came here last year
to teach man technique. I learned so much from him when it
comes to playing proper technique.
Alex Khvatov:
Besides football, what other sports did you play in high
school?
Mark Parson:
I ran track and I played
basketball. To tell you the truth, I didn't even like track.
The track coach would ask me to run the 100 meters. I would
come in first place. I also like baseball, but I didn't play it
in high school
Alex Khvatov:
Describe the experience of playing for your head coach Frank
Solich.
Mark Parson:
You wouldn't think that he
would be such a nice guy coming from a big time program like
Nebraska. He allows us to stop by his office and talk about
anything. He would actually call you out of the blue. He is
really cool. He is a laid back guy off the field. But his
intensity on the field goes up even in practices.
Alex Khvatov:
Could you tell me about your teammate senior running back
Kalvin McRae?
Mark Parson:
We call him 'Big Play McRae'.
He is in Atlanta right now getting ready for the Combine. He
calls me to tell me what type of workouts they are doing and
what kind of a diet they are on. He is a great leader and he
was our captain for two years. He is cool. He works hard and
he leads by example. He is an all-around good guy. On the
field, he makes people miss and he breaks tackles. He also has
great hands.
Alex Khvatov:
What is your favorite NFL team?
Mark Parson:
My favorite college team
growing up was UVA. In high school, I was a Virginia Tech fan.
I was a little bit bitter because they didn't recruit me. My
favorite NFL teams are the Bills because my dad is from Buffalo
and the Redskins.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is your favorite player?
Mark Parson:
My favorite player of all-time
is Deion Sanders. Right now, Al Harris is my favorite player in
the league.
Alex Khvatov:
What are your strengths on the football field?
Mark Parson:
Playing man-to-man. That is
what we do here. I can move my feet pretty well. I come out of
my breaks well. I can use my hands. I like pressing, but I can
play off as well. I can turn my hips and run with a guy.
Alex Khvatov:
What areas of your game do you need to improve upon?
Mark Parson:
I definitely need to improve on
my ball skills. I dropped a lot of interceptions here and I
need to make the most of my opportunities. I could definitely
improve in run support a little bit as well.
Alex Khvatov:
Mark, what is the highlight of your football career up to
this point?
Mark Parson:
Ok, I got it. My sophomore
year, we played Illinois. It was a close game and we pulled it
out in the end. I was in a zone. I had an interception, six
pass break-ups and a bunch of tackles. It was 3rd and 15 on
their side of the field, I broke on the ball and I got the pass
break-up. After that we drove in the fourth quarter and won the
game. That was the greatest feeling winning that game. Their
fans were dissing us before the game because we were from Ohio
University and not from Ohio State. It felt great beating
Illinois and seeing their fans' faces after the game.
Alex Khvatov:
Your team played a perennial powerhouse Virginia Tech last
year, what did you take away from that game?
Mark Parson:
They actually had receivers
that were all seniors. They only threw my way four times. I
got my hand on one ball. They should have thrown my way more.
They didn't get any catches on me. They didn't really get much
on our passing defense. I can cover with the best. I think
Josh Morgan and Eddie Royal could play in the league. Morgan
has deceptive speed for a big guy.
Alex Khvatov:
How disappointing was it to go 6-6 last season?
Mark Parson:
I mean to tell you the truth, I
hate losing. I felt that we would have a better season this
year. We had a lot of seniors leave and it left a void on our
team. We were young on the defensive side of the ball. The
teams that beat us, all of the games were close. A couple of
plays went their way. I feel that we will be better next year.
Alex Khvatov:
What does it mean to you personally to carry on the
cornerback tradition at Ohio?
Mark Parson:
Basically, that is my goal.
Deion Brown was an All-American a couple of years ago. T.J.
Wright will be in someone's camp this year. If he didn't break
his foot in Bills' camp, he would have made the team. It is up
to me and the younger guys to carry the torch and handle
everything this upcoming season.
Alex Khvatov:
What does it mean to you to see small school cornerback
prospects receive so much attention leading up to this year's
draft? (Leodis McKelvin of Troy and D. Rodgers-Cromartie of
Tennessee St.)
Mark Parson:
I have NFL Network, so I
watched the Senior Bowl. The guy from Troy, I watched him on TV
when he was playing against Oklahoma State. I could tell that
he was good. He had quick feet and got his hands on all of
balls. Cromartie could play too. If I get the opportunity to
make plays next year, it will help me out too.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is the toughest player that you have faced during your
career?
Mark Parson:
Okay, a couple of guys during
my sophomore year. One guy was from Missouri and he was No. 3.
His name is William Franklin and he was a really good receiver.
In the MAC Championship game, No. 3 from Central Michigan was
really good at the line, had quick feet and outrageous ball
skills.
Alex Khvatov:
Which underclassman on your team should we keep an eye on in
the future?
Mark Parson:
Let me see, probably cornerback
Julian Posey. He started as a redshirt freshman this year. He
will carry the torch. He should be the starter next year.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is your role model in life?
Mark Parson:
The role model in my life is my
dad. He handles adversity really well. He is a great person to
look up to. He is actually a minister. My older brother is
another guy. I like how he deals with his family.
Alex Khvatov:
What do you enjoy most about playing football?
Mark Parson:
I have been playing since five
years old. I played football with all of my friends. I love to
play close games. Playing man-to man and knowing that they will
throw your way. There is also no other feeling like it when
70,000 people are booing you.
Alex Khvatov:
What should we expect from you next year?
Mark Parson:
Oh man, I feel like our run
defense will be much better, and they would have to throw the
ball on us more. I would get my hands on a lot more balls. My
ball skills will be better. I am getting better every day. I
will come down with more picks.
Alex Khvatov:
What do you like to do away from the football field?
Mark Parson:
My hobbies are video games. I
like to play NCAA Football. I am taking a Tae Kwon Doe class
and I like that. I like watching Ultimate Fighting and hanging
out with my fellows.
Alex Khvatov:
Finish the sentence, Mark Parson is…..
Mark Parson:
He is a cool, laid back type of guy. He doesn't
like any drama. He likes to have fun and joke around. On the
field, he is intense. He talks trash and will be in your face
all day. So you better bring your game.
