When prize QB recruit Brian Brohm signed with Louisville there was a
collective cheer from Cardinals fans that could be heard all over
the great state of Kentucky, and undoubtedly a rather large groan
from Big East fans, where the Cardinals will be heading to at the
start of the 2005 season. Visions of Brohm throwing deep outs to J.R.
Russell, and handing off to Eric Shelton and Lionel Gates no doubt
filled the dreams of redbird fans everywhere. There is no question
that there will be a call for Brohm to see time this year at water
coolers all over that state being that he is such a tremendous
talent, and that the Cardinals spent near all of their recruiting
efforts and resources to land the 6’4 hometown stud from Trinity
High. However the hardcore Cardinals fans know that there is no need
for Brohm to even sniff the field in 2004. Why is this you ask?
Stefan Lefors, that’s why
Lefors may be the best quarterback in college football that no one
has ever heard of. Last season Lefors lead the Cardinals high
powered offense that was one of the highest scoring and most potent
in all of the collegiate ranks. In 2003 Stefan tossed for 3,145
yards and completed over 61% of his passes. He tossed 17 Touchdown
passes including 3 on the road against the Syracuse Orange, and 2
each against conference rivals Houston and Cincinnati. Perhaps
Lefors’ best weapon is his ability to scramble around, escape the
pass rush, and create big plays with his feet. Last season he was
fourth on the Cardinals, rushing for 405 yards and 3 TD’s including
a 69 yarder that proved to be huge in the regular season finale win
over the Cincinnati Bearcats. Lefors has proven he can win and that
he will lay it all out on the line to give his team a chance. At
only 6’0 200 lbs, he is not the impressive physical specimen that
Brohm is, but he has that all important intangible quality that can
not be taught. Heart.
As the Louisville Cardinals continue to improve and gain national
recognition there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Brian Brohm will
be the face of the UL’s program. He will make them a force for years
to come in the soon to be realigned Big East, and by his senior
season his potential will hopefully translate into a BCS birth. One
thing is for sure about the 2004 season however, Stefan Lefors has
what it takes to lead the Cardinals to a Conference USA
championship.
