Kerry Brown Interview
Offensive Guard - Appalachian State
Alex Khvatov: Now
that the season is over, what is your daily routine?
Kerry Brown:
I am just here at
Appalachian State working out at the facility every day. I wake up
at six or seven o'clock in the morning. I do some cardio work.
Then I go to class. I am taking two classes right now, so I can
graduate in May. Then I go back to the facility to lift weights. I
watch film and take notes. I watch combine tapes. I workout some
more and go running at the end of the day. I have a couple of meals
in between those workouts. (By the way he was working out until
10:30 at night when I called him to do the interview).
Alex Khvatov:
What is you current height, weight and forty time?
Kerry Brown:
I am 6'5€, 310
and I ran a 5.08 at the facility today when I was working with the
track coaches.
Alex Khvatov:
What schools expressed interest in you when you were coming out of
high school?
Kerry Brown:
It is actually a
weird story. My freshman year of high school I was only 5'6€ and
160 pounds. Then my sophomore year I experienced a humongous growth
spurt and ballooned all the way up to 6'4€ and 260 pounds. I had
difficulty adjusting to my new frame. I started playing football my
junior year of high school and only became the starter my senior
year. I had an outstanding senior year in high school. I was
athletic and quick for an offensive lineman. In football camps, I
was told that I could play college football. Auburn, Clemson,
Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and East Carolina all showed
interest in me. I loved Appalachian State and I signed with them
early.
Alex Khvatov:
What made you choose Appalachian State?
Kerry Brown:
I wasn't a blue
chip prospect. Appalachian State cared about me. They really
showed interest in me and that drew me to the school. I loved the
school and the atmosphere. Coach Moore is like a father to all of
us. We had talent and great people that wanted to work hard. I
love to hunt and fish and that is the place to do it. It is in the
mountains. Dad told me to go to a place where they care about you.
This school has great academics. I told myself why not go to a
winning program that cares about you. All of our players have so
much passion and heart.
Alex Khvatov:
What other sports did you play?
Kerry Brown:
I was more of a
basketball person growing up. My dad played basketball at Georgia
Tech. Then I burned out on basketball. My frame didn't fit the
prototypical basketball player any more. I was more of a track and
a wrestling guy after that. I was on the wrestling team my senior
year of high school. I really enjoyed that. I love track. I was
on the track team at Appalachian State the first two years and I was
an All-American in the shot put.
Alex Khvatov:
What are your strengths as a football player?
Kerry Brown:
Probably my heart.
I am tough and hard-nosed. I give great effort. My speed, athletic
ability and work ethic. I make a lot of blocks downfield. I am a
strong guy and I broke every lifting record at App. St.
Alex Khvatov:
What areas of your game do you need to improve on?
Kerry Brown:
Everything. There
is always stuff I can work on. You can take the best player in the
NFL and he still needs to work on some things. I am not the best
technician. I am good at zone blocking and run blocking. I just
need to keep working on my blocking technique. Will Shields showed
me some stuff at the camp that I attended in New Jersey for a couple
of days. We broke down tape. He told me that the hardest part
would probably be just learning the offensive lineman lingo at the
next level. My pass blocking is better suited for tackle
Alex Khvatov:
What was your favorite team growing up?
Kerry Brown:
I have always
rooted for the Packers and the Falcons.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is your favorite player?
Kerry Brown:
Of course, Larry
Allen and Flozell Adams. I think Steve Hutchinson is a great
player. He is athletic and a monster. Jeff Saturday is a great
player too. I admire Todd Herrmann and Kevin Boothe. I love to
watch the offensive linemen in the NFL.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is the best player that you have faced during your college
career?
Kerry Brown:
I have gone up
against Tank Tyler and Glenn Dorsey and they are great players.
Claude Wroten would probably be the best player that I have faced.
He was solid and quick off the ball. He used his hands well and was
built like a brick wall.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is the one underclassman on your team that we should keep an eye
on in the future?
Kerry Brown:
Armanti Edwards.
He is an animal on the field. He is a great player. Running back
Devon Moore would be another guy. Freshman linebacker D.J. Smith
only started seven games and had over 100 tackles. He is an animal
that will get drafted high. He is 5'11€ 230 and he hits like a
brick wall. He reminds me of a Dexter Coakley type of player.
Alex Khvatov:
Describe the experience of beating Michigan in Ann Arbor this year.
Kerry Brown:
When they first
told us in 2006 that we were playing Michigan, we thought that they
were going to kill us. We wanted to show them who we are. FSN was
doing a show on us leading up to the Michigan game. We didn't want
to make a fool of ourselves. We practiced very hard that week in
the heat. When their stadium was empty, it wasn't that impressive.
But I got dizzy when it was jam packed with their fans. Before the
game, they looked at us with the smirk on their faces. They didn't
respect us at all. We played our game. Our offense never missed a
beat and we ran our no-huddle offense. We were very
well-conditioned and we wore them down. At halftime, we were
leading and then in the second half they made their comeback. Then
Corey Lynch blocked a field goal at the end of the game. We didn't
think that it was going to be labeled the biggest upset of
all-time. That whole week afterwards was crazy. ESPN was calling.
It was an amazing experience and it put our school on the map. It
was a great experience.
Alex Khvatov:
How did you feel when your team won the third straight Division IAA
Championship this year?
Kerry Brown:
When you win the
third championship, you realize that you are part of history. We
dominated that last game to win the third title. That one meant
more because it proved that it wasn't a fluke. Our conference is
the hardest one in Division I AA. We had two losses this season.
We are a mean and feisty team. We are great at scheming people.
Our coaches do a great job at that. It is an honor to be a part of
this team. It is just a history making experience. I am honored to
be one of the leaders of this team. I wanted to go out on top.
Alex Khvatov:
What does it take to be a winner?
Kerry Brown:
To be a winner on
the football field, you have to have chemistry. We have great
chemistry on this team. We have a great coaching staff. We all
care about each other. The best thing for our team is adversity.
We lost two games this season and we were tested every week. That
made us stronger. We embraced adversity. We have faith in our
Bible study. Speakers come in and give us compassion. We trust and
respect everyone and ourselves. We keep working hard. Being strong
from within is the most important thing. You have to have the will
and a heartbeat.
Alex Khvatov:
You have received many accolades over your career, which one means
the most to you?
Kerry Brown:
Jacobs Blocking
Trophy means the most to me. It is an award given to the top
offensive lineman in our conference and I have received it two years
in a row. It put me on the map. Being an All-American is a great
thing as well.
Alex Khvatov:
What are your hobbies?
Kerry Brown:
I am a hunter and a
fisherman. I have a big ranch in Georgia. I like to go hunting in
the middle of the week. I hunt all the time. It is one of the
greatest feelings. I was put in that environment when I was eleven
years old. I love to go hunting in the woods with my dog. I would
love to get drafted by Carolina or Atlanta or Denver and continue to
hunt all the time.
Alex Khvatov:
Describe yourself to an average football fan.
Kerry Brown:
I am a really caring person. I just got engaged to a
great girl named Amanda recently. I am a friendly guy and
well-mannered. I am a Southern gentleman. I am just a great guy.
I am humble and I know my roots. I don't take any day for granted.
I make the best of each and every day. I am a good friend. I
always help people. I have a great work ethic. I love the game. I
have a mean streak on the field.
