Keenan Burton Interview
Wide Receiver - Kentucky

By: Alex Khvatov

3/19/08

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight, forty time and bench press)?

Keenan BurtonI am 6'1 and 203 pounds.  I ran a 4.43 at the Combine and did 10 reps at the bench press.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Kentucky coming out of high school?

Keenan BurtonIt was a situation where I didn't have a lot of offers.  Indiana was the only other big school that showed interest in me.  I also felt that I would be able to contribute early at Kentucky.  It was an opportunity where my parents would be able to see me play.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your overall experience at the Scouting Combine.

Keenan BurtonIt went great.  It was an opportunity to showcase myself.  I met a lot of good guys.  I was able to compete well in a stressful situation.  Interviews surprised me the most about the Combine.  I have never been in a situation like that.

Alex Khvatov:  What was the most unique question that you had to answer during the interview process?

Keenan BurtonDo you have a girlfriend?  That question really surprised me.  They want to figure out if you have someone that will be moving with you.

Alex Khvatov:  Did you get a chance to bond with a player from another team at the Combine?

Keenan BurtonDeSean Jackson was my roommate at the Combine and he is a great player.  It was good meeting him.  Basically I bonded with Matt Ryan, Davone Bess, Darius Reynaud and Steve Slaton at the Athlete's Performance facility that I worked at out leading up to the Combine.

Alex Khvatov:  Were you satisfied with your performance at the Pro Day?

Keenan BurtonI was definitely satisfied.  I talked to all of the teams.  It was a less stressful situation.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your teammate Steve Johnson.

Keenan BurtonHe is a very explosive guy.  He wants to learn and he is a hard worker.  He opened some eyes at the Pro Day.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your head coach Rich Brooks.

Keenan BurtonDefinitely, he was a very good head coach.  He wants to show you how to be a man off-the-field and he helped me with that.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your former quarterback Andre Woodson.

Keenan BurtonHe is a very good teammate.  He will be fine at the next level.  People are focusing on the one negative thing that he does and doubt his ability.  He has done a lot of great things throughout his career.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the one NFL player that you would compare your game to?

Keenan BurtonI think that I can be like Steve Smith, the rookie from the Giants.  I kind of play like him.  He is a possession receiver that can also make some plays downfield.  He just makes plays.  He knows how to get open.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your football career up to this point?

Keenan BurtonI would have to say going to back-to-back bowls.  I am a team player.  I was glad that I was a part of putting Kentucky back on the map.  I like the direction that the school is going in.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Keenan BurtonI don't have one.  I like watching different offenses in the NFL.  The Pats and the Colts offenses really stand out to me.  They do so many different things.  I like how the Pats use Kevin Faulk out of the backfield.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite player?

Keenan BurtonI admire Chad Johnson.  I like how fast he gets out of his routes.  We are about the same size.  He runs good routes and has good speed.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths on the football field?

Keenan BurtonDefinitely, I am able to out jump guys.  I use good timing on the jumps.  I run good routes and that is a great asset to have.  Sometimes I want to do things too perfect.  I am a student of the game.  I know what the defense is doing.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game do you need to improve upon?

Keenan BurtonI need to learn how to play the game.  I don't know what to expect in the NFL.  I need to learn how to recognize certain defenses.  I need to run routes how they want me to do it.

Alex Khvatov:  Who are the toughest players that you have faced during your career?

Keenan BurtonThomas Davis and Laron Landry are the toughest players that I faced.  I couldn't believe how fast they were.  The speed that they played at was unreal.  Thomas Davis was also very physical.

Alex Khvatov:  Which underclassman on your team should we keep an eye on in the future?

Keenan BurtonSophomore Trevard Lindley is a CB that you should watch.  He will be the best CB in the country next year.  He is tall with good speed.  He also has such good technique, but he is still a bit of a raw talent.  He is an outstanding player that gave me the most competition.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about playing football?

Keenan BurtonI enjoy competing.  I enjoyed the whole Friday nights atmosphere.  I am definitely going to miss college football.  Football is America's sport.  I feel blessed that I can play this game.

Alex Khvatov:  Where do you think that you are going to get drafted?

Keenan BurtonI am hearing the second or the third round.  I did good at the Combine and at the Pro day

Alex Khvatov:  I heard that you just had a visit with the Atlanta Falcons, tell me about that experience.

Keenan BurtonIt went really good.  I caught a lot of passes.  I showed them that I can run routes.  Their coach was impressed with my route running.  It was a chance to show them that I was coachable.

Alex Khvatov:  When did you realize that you can play in the NFL?

Keenan BurtonI wanted to play in the NFL for so long.  I just had to stay healthy when I was younger.  It became more of a reality during my junior year.

Alex Khvatov:  What separates you from all of the other players at your position?

Keenan BurtonI don't do one thing great.  I do a lot of things good.  I don't mind doing the little things on the field.  It also helps that I am a kick returner.  It shows that I can help the team in other ways.

Alex Khvatov:  What other sports did you play in high school?

Keenan BurtonI ran track and played basketball.  I was mainly a quarter miler.  But I also ran the 100 and 200 yards.  Running track helped me on the football field.  I ran sprints and it helped me with my conditioning.  I feel that I can stay on the field for a long time without getting tired.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the one thing in your daily life that you can't live without?

Keenan BurtonSleeping.  You see me napping throughout the day.  It is so much fun.  One nap helps me get through the day.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me something about yourself that makes you unique?

Keenan BurtonThere is definitely something unique about me.  I have a fraternal twin.  It is a girl.  She ran track her freshman year in high school until she quit.  She is in fashion design right now.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you like to do away from the football field?

Keenan BurtonJust to get away and drive somewhere.  I like to listen to music.  I like to just relax and watch TV.  I like to watch the TV show "My Wife and Kids".  I enjoy the "Bad Boys" movies and all of the "Friday" movies.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Keenan Burton is:..

Keenan BurtonOn the field, I am a hungry, focused and determined player.  Off-the-field, I am laid back.  I will have fun regardless of what it is.
