Johnny Dingle Interview
Defensive End - West Virginia

By: Alex Khvatov

2/2/08

Alex Khvatov:  What is your current height, weight and forty time?

Johnny Dingle: I am 6'3", 270, and I run 4.7 flat.

Alex Khvatov:  You still had one year of eligibility left, why did you decide to enter the draft?

Johnny DingleAs a young kid, I was watching football on TV and I always wanted to play in the NFL.  I felt that I had the numbers to compete with the defensive ends this year.  I heard that I could be a third or a fourth round pick.  I just want to go out and perform.  I am 23 years old and I have been out of high school for five years.  Coach Rodriguez told me that I had the talent to play at the next level.  I had a good bowl game performance and I decided to leave.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you preparing for the Scouting Combine?

Johnny DingleYou know, I am taking it one day at a time.  I am preparing myself with Tom Shaw who is a trainer here in Orlando.  I wake up at 7:15 am, get ready, eat a bowl of cereal and have my shake.  I am working really on my speed and maintaining my weight.  I am trying to get faster.  I am working on my hips and on getting more explosive.  I am preparing myself for the possible move to linebacker.

Alex Khvatov:  What schools expressed interest in you when you were coming out of high school?

Johnny DingleUniversity of Florida and LSU.  It came down to those two schools.  I started out at Florida, but I had academic problems and I had to sit out a year.

Alex Khvatov:  What made you choose West Virginia after things didn't work out at Florida?

Johnny DingleI called West Virginia, and Coach Rodriguez stuck with me.  Once I got the grades, I enrolled at West Virginia in the spring of 2004.

Alex Khvatov:  What are you going to miss the most about West Virginia?

Johnny Dingle:  The fans, the night games, and coming out of that tunnel.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths as a football player?

Johnny DingleGetting after the quarterback, reading my opponent, going out there and having fun.  I hate opposing quarterbacks, but I love my quarterback.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game do you need to improve on?

Johnny DingleWell, my 40 time and my knowledge of the game.  You know, just getting my body up to par.

Alex Khvatov:  What was your favorite team growing up?

Johnny DingleWhen I was growing up, my favorite team in college was Miami.  My favorite team in the NFL was the Dallas Cowboys.  Now I root for the Patriots.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite player?

Johnny DingleLawrence Taylor and Jevon Kearse.  Taylor hated the quarterbacks and he loved to hit them.  Jevon Kearse was a freak, a lion mixed with an alligator, you know.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced during your college career?

Johnny DingleCharles Spencer of the Houston Texans.  He played at Pittsburgh.  For him to be that size and to have such good feet.  You know, he was strong and fast.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the one underclassman on your team that we should keep an eye on in the future?

Johnny DingleLinebacker J.T. Thomas, Scooter Berry, Noel Devine and Jock Sanders.  Watch out for those guys.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your greatest football moment up to this point?

Johnny DingleIt was Thursday night at Maryland this year.  Ray Lewis was on the sidelines.  It was a running back's screen, and I sniffed out.  He really felt the rifle of Johnny Dingle.  It was a big hit.  Wait till you go see it on ESPN, I am sure they saved it in their highlights.  After the game, Ray Lewis told me "good game".

Alex Khvatov:  Describe the experience of beating Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl this year?

Johnny DingleWell, we, we have a team.  We knew that we can play with anybody.  Everyone was doubting us.  We went out there and left it on the field.  It was a great win.  It was no shock to us.  We knew we could play good football.  It felt good to go out on top.  We just went there and handled our business.  The West Virginia motto is we do our talking on the field.

Alex Khvatov:  Has the NFL always been in the back of your mind?

Johnny DingleYes, since I have been a young kid.  Since I have been watching the Dallas Cowboys, and wearing my Michael Irvin's jersey.  I dreamed of catching passes like him.  It just so happened that I turned into a defensive player.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Johnny DingleChill, relax and play a little basketball.  I used to play video games, but not anymore.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Johnny Dingle is...

Johnny DingleA.K.A. sack man.  You know, I am a smooth, funny guy.  You want to have me as one of your guys.  I will always have fun no matter what I do.
