Running Back -
Southeastern Louisiana
7/24/08
By:
Tony Conty
Tony Conty: What is your current
height, weight and 40 time?
Jay Lucas: My current height and weight is 5'10" or 5'11" and 225
lbs. My 40 time is about a 4.5
Tony Conty: You came out of high school having won a state
championship. What schools showed you interest?
Jay Lucas: LSU, Florida State, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Georgia...a
whole bunch of SEC schools, but I ended up going to Texas A&M.
Tony Conty: What circumstances led you to Southeastern Louisiana?
Jay Lucas: They wanted me to switch my position to Fullback, and I
didn't want to play Fullback at the time, because I never got a
chance to show my skills at Tailback at Texas A&M, so I decided to
transfer and come down here to Southeastern where my Dad had played
basketball.
Tony Conty: Here we are in late July. Describe your workout
schedule in the offseason to our readers.
Jay Lucas: My workout schedule is Monday through Friday, nonstop.
Monday, I start at about 6 a. m. until around 8. Then, I have a
break. I come back out in the evening around 5:30 and get some
extra workouts in on the field. That's every day, Monday through
Friday.
Tony Conty: What would you describe as your biggest strengths as a
player?
Jay Lucas: My biggest strengths as a player are my vision and
running between the tackles.
Tony Conty: What areas of your game are you working on the most to
improve?
Jay Lucas: Being more of a practice player, like finishing runs
during practice.
Tony Conty: In watching tape of you, you definitely got more action
as a receiver out of the backfield last year. Talk about your
junior season and how you feel that you took some steps forward.
Jay Lucas: My junior season came up and, yeah, I was more like a
receiver because of the way our offense ran. They use me out of the
backfield with screens and they use me when the Quarterback is in
trouble. I had to have great hands and that got me great exposure.
Tony Conty: OK...being from Baton Rouge...are you a Saints fan?
Jay Lucas: Not really, but as I got older, I became more of a
Saints fan because I like the idea of being close to home.
Tony Conty: Which players at your position do you admire?
Jay Lucas: Definitely Emmitt Smith.
Tony Conty: Who were the most dominant defenders that you faced in
your career as a Southland Conference standout?
Jay Lucas: Rufus Alexander in the Big 12, but Bryan Smith, a
Linebacker from McNeese State, was the toughest defensive player I
played in the Southland Conference.
Tony Conty: What other players on your team should we, as a Draft
Site, watch for in the future?
Jay Lucas: Willie Pritchett is a natural Defensive Lineman that
will help us on the Offensive Line this year. He's from the
Gulf-Coast and was an All-American. Tony Johnson is a solid
Cornerback who went to my high school. He may not be the fastest
guy, but he gets the job done. Brian Reynolds is a Cornerback to
watch who just transferred from Itawamba Junior College.
Tony Conty: What should we expect from Southeastern Louisiana this
year?
Jay Lucas: You should expect another winning season. We need to
get rolling on Defense and Offense from Game One against Alcorn
State. We have a lot of talent coming in and some new freshmen
could play. From me personally...well, last year I set the record
for yards and I want to break my own record and maybe hit 2,000. I
tied the record for Touchdowns last year with 16 and I hope to have
at least 17 or 18 this year.
Tony Conty: What are your plans for life after football?
Jay Lucas: I hope to get married, start a business, and have kids.
Tony Conty: What is your major?
Jay Lucas: General Studies with a concentration in Consumer
Science.
Tony Conty: What do you do to get away from football?
Jay Lucas: My weekends are important to me. I like to have silent
time with my family. I love being with my niece, my sister's
daughter who will be 2 in September. I also play a lot of
basketball.
Tony Conty: OK, time for a tough question. What do you think of
the Brett Favre situation?
Jay Lucas: I think he's a good man. He has shown a love for the
game, but I guess it's important to know when it's done. He had
some great years and will enter the Hall of Fame easily.
Tony Conty: How do you feel about the NFL's crackdown on
off-the-field issues and character?
Jay Lucas: Character is very important to the game and in life,
period. Some of these guys are showing their true selves by what
they do in the night time. When you are making millions of dollars,
people are going to take an interest in your life outside the game.
Tony Conty: Alright...self-promote why should teams consider you in
next year's draft?
Jay Lucas: I feel that I have the character and the talent. I am a
good person, most of all. I should go higher than some have
projected me.
