Jared Brock Interview
West Texas A&M
- Outside Linebacker
9/13/08
By:
Chris Horwedel
Chris Horwedel: What was
it that attracted you to West Texas A&M?
Jared Brock:
Well my Dad had
gone there and my sister was going to school here at the
time, plus they were really the only place that
recruited me really hard out of High school.
Chris Horwedel -
You
were an outstanding baseball player in high school,
did you consider playing in college?
Jared Brock:
No I never considered playing baseball.
I loved playing football and for me there was never
really much doubt I was going somewhere to play
football.
Chris Horwedel: Is there a player you pattern the way you
play after?
Jared Brock:
I haven't really thought about it I have been
really blessed to have had some success at the game
I love. I guess I would like to be like Zach Thomas
in a lot of ways. I really just hope at the end of
the day that I have nothing left to give that
everyday I have done my best to prepare and in that
way I can have few regrets.
Chris Horwedel: Do you think that it's necessary for
players to have a certain amount of an ego in order
to truly excel in the game of football?
Jared Brock:
I think it depends some on the position if you
are a DB then I say definitely. Playing out there on
the edge like that is tough and you have to be able
to forget the last play quickly. All in all I
suppose everyone needs a bit of ego but that is a
double edged sword and you have to be careful. I
would hope to play the game for God and in that way
not need as much of an ego because I am more
confident in what He is doing for me than just being
confident in myself.
Chris Horwedel: What's something that would surprise people
about Jared Brock?
Jared Brock:
I love to fish in my free time during the summers
any chance I get I am going fishing. That and I try
to play the game for God. Jesus Christ is my Lord
and Savior and He has changed my life completely. He
is the reason for my success.
Chris Horwedel: Considering the amount of money generated
by college sports team, do you think that student
athletes should be paid?
Jared Brock:
I am not sure that at the
age of 18,19, and 20 that they could handle it. A
person who gets there degree makes on average a
million more dollars in their life than somebody who
doesn't. So if you take care of business it is like
you are getting paid an extra million dollars in the
long run. But this is a tough question with points
to both sides of the argument.
Chris Horwedel: Before the snap, what's the first thing
you're looking for in the opposing offense?
Jared Brock:
Things they give away by alignment are they heavy on
their hands, what is their run pass percentage out
of this personal, and what are the possible plays I
could see out of this formation.
Chris Horwedel: If you had to single out one guy on your
team for having stepped (up) this year, who would it
be and why?
Jared Brock:
Anthony Clark because He has been dedicated to the
program and what we are trying to accomplish here at
WT. He is already a great athlete but he has worked
really hard to improve himself as a football player.
He didn't miss one workout all summer long. I am
expecting to see some really exciting things out of
him this year.
Chris Horwedel: Who is the toughest opposing player you
gone up against in your time in college?
Jared Brock:
To be honest the toughest guys sometimes really are
not the big brusers you would imagine but they are
relentless in the way the play, bringing it to you
every play. For that reason I would have to say Eric
Hatchet from North East Oklahoma in 06. We pounded
him hard all night and yet He still was running just
as hard at the end of the game as at the first.
Chris Horwedel: If you could add any one current college
football player to the West Texas A&M roster today,
who would it be and why?
Jared Brock:
We have a great group of guys this year so it is
really tough to say, But I guess I would have to go
with Micheal Crabtree. He does some amazing things on
the field and would make us that much more tougher.
Chris Horwedel: How do you feel you stack up against the
top linebackers in the country?
Jared Brock:
I have never really thought about that to be honest
I am more concerned with how I stack up against the
top O-line men and Tight ends that I have to face.
As far as they go I feel pretty confident in myself
I have faced some pretty good ones and have never
felt like the beat me on a consistent basis.
Chris Horwedel: If you could pick a pro team to play for,
who would it be?
Jared Brock:
Dallas Cowboys I have grown up watching them and it
was my dream when I was a little boy to play for
them.
Chris Horwedel: What's more
important to you in the beginning of your NFL
career: Being on a great team or being able to
play early on?
Jared Brock:
I like winning myself, so I think
that being on a great team would be a lot of
fun.
Chris Horwedel: What's your current height/weight/40?
Jared Brock:
5-11 3/4, 233,
4.84-4.9
Chris Horwedel: Which one quality do you consider your
greatest strength?
Jared Brock:
I prepare extremely hard in the film room and on
the field. I feel like I have an advantage on
Game day and have a feel for what the play is
going to be before the snap.
Chris Horwedel: Which area of your game do you feel
needs a bit of work?
Jared Brock:
My speed for sure I need to work to get my forty
down to 4.7, but I have always felt I am quicker
than I am fast.
Chris Horwedel: Which one of your games, more than any
other, sticks out in your mind?
Jared Brock:
Northeast Oklahoma in 06 for sure i had 20
tackles that game God really blessed me that
night and I could do no wrong.
Chris Horwedel: Lets talk get
to the important stuff. What's the last movie you
saw, cd you bought and video game that you played?
Jared Brock:
I
just watched Traitor good movie, John Mayer's Cd was
the last one I bought, and Battle for Asgard was the
last video game I played.
Chris Horwedel: What's the best advice you've been given?
Jared Brock:
My Dad has taught me a
lot of things, but the most important is to always
keep God first in all things.
