Alex Khvatov:
What are your measurements (height,
weight and forty time)?
Chip Vaughn:
I am 6’2” and 222 pounds. The fastest that they had me at
was a 4.36 at the Combine.
Alex Khvatov:
Coming
out of high school, what programs showed the most interest
in you?
Chip Vaughn:
Wake Forest gave me an offer. Colorado was also very
interested.
Alex Khvatov:
What made
you choose Wake Forest?
Chip Vaughn:
Well, Coach Groh and his whole staff were great. It
actually felt like a lot like family. Some of my relatives
lived in town. I wanted to get a good education.
Alex Khvatov:
Your name
is actually Clarence, so where did the name Chip originate
from?
Chip Vaughn:
I was actually born Clarence. I was named after my great
grandfather. Chip came from my grandmother. She named me
that when I was a baby.
Alex Khvatov: Tell me about
your Senior Bowl experience.
Chip Vaughn:
It was the whole atmosphere of the college game. The best
guys were out there. Everything was at full speed.
Everybody at the Jacksonville staff was great. It is a good
organization. I got a good feel from them.
Alex Khvatov:
What did you learn the most about
yourself during the Senior Bowl week?
Chip Vaughn:
I learned that a lot of the guys were hyped up. I don’t
know what teams saw in them. What I learned about myself is
that you always need things to improve on.
Alex Khvatov:
How would you rate your Scouting Combine
performance?
Chip Vaughn:
Great. I ran the fastest time of any safety. I did the
interviews. I hit every single of my goals. I put in the
hard work and got to see the results. Everything that
happened is what I expected.
Alex Khvatov: Were you
surprised by your forty time?
Chip Vaughn:
I actually had a goal to run under a 4.39. I did that, so I
am not shocked by it.
Alex Khvatov: Have you had
any official visits with NFL teams already?
Chip Vaughn:
I just got done with the Bills. I had a workout with the
Patriots. I will have a workout with the Raiders this week.
Alex Khvatov: Describe a
couple of your teammates to me who figure to be high picks
in the upcoming draft, LB Aaron Curry and CB Alphonso Smith.
Chip Vaughn:
Aaron Curry is the most caring and humble person that I have
ever been around. He will have your back regardless. We
talk a lot. I haven’t seen another LB like that. You turn
on the tape and he destroys the tight ends. He is a great
football player. He doesn’t have many weaknesses. Alphonso
is a character. He is the guy that will bring the whole
football team together. It’s all in his swagger. He is the
best player out there. He proves that every week. He is
the most competitive person that I know. He hates to lose
whether it is football or chess or checkers. That
competitive nature drives him to be a great football player.
Alex Khvatov:
What are
your strengths on the football field?
Chip Vaughn:
I am a true student of the game. I watch a lot of film. I
know what the opposing offenses are going to do. Safety is
the QB of the defense. It makes you very accountable. You
always need to be on your game.
Alex Khvatov:
What
areas of your game do you need to improve upon?
Chip Vaughn:
It is easy, everything. I need to work on tackling, pass
coverage, my hands, footwork and I need to get stronger. I
am just scratching the surface. I have a long way to go.
Alex Khvatov:
How would
you rate your performance during your senior campaign?
Chip Vaughn:
My senior year, I would give myself a B+ grade. I am very
critical of myself and my play.
Alex Khvatov:
What is
the most memorable moment of your football career up to this
point?
Chip Vaughn:
Winning the ACC Championship. It is not common at Wake
Forest. We were picked to finish dead last in the
Conference. Only the coaches and 100 guys in our locker
room believed that we can do it. Even the fans and the
media didn’t think that it was possible. It is the best
memory that I have.
Alex Khvatov:
What is
your favorite NFL team?
Chip Vaughn:
Growing up it was the Green Bay Packers. My Pee Wee team
had the same color jerseys as them.
Alex Khvatov:
Who do
you pattern your game after?
Chip Vaughn:
Jack Tatum and Sean Taylor. I tried to find some tape of
Jack Tatum. But the only tape that I have watched is NFL
films and some you tube.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is
the best safety in the NFL right now?
Chip Vaughn:
Ed Reed.
Alex Khvatov:
Who is
the toughest player that you have faced during your career?
Chip Vaughn:
I would say Leon Washington or Calvin Johnson. But Leon
Washington is a back that I faced a lot more.
Alex Khvatov:
Which
underclassmen on your team should we keep an eye on in the
future?
Chip Vaughn:
Well, CB Brandon Ghee, DT Boo Robinson and QB Riley
Skinner. Riley Skinner is a young Drew Brees, mark it
down.
Alex Khvatov:
How will
you be able to help an NFL team next season?
Chip Vaughn:
I bring everything and more. I bring off-the-field skills
sets. I help out the inner city. I am all about being a
good person of the field. You need to remember that you are
always a football player even off-the-field. You need to
carry yourself in a proper manner
Alex Khvatov:
What do
you enjoy most about playing football?
Chip Vaughn:
I enjoy competing. I love to practice. I like being out
there and having fun with the guys. You form long life
friendships. You all come together to achieve one goal
every week.
Alex Khvatov:
What do
you plan to do after your football career is over?
Chip Vaughn:
My first option is do nothing, but relax the first few
years. Save all of the money that I have. Then start
coaching after that. Second option is going back to
school. Go to Graduate School and get my MBA. Do some
financial planning. I plan to do an internship with Morgan
Stanley.
Alex Khvatov:
What are
your hobbies?
Chip Vaughn:
I like to cook because I love to eat. I play chess and I
like it. Football and chess are very similar. I like
playing Playstation and Xbox sometimes.
Alex Khvatov:
What
makes you unique?
Chip Vaughn:
I am original. I follow my own path. Chip Vaughn is Chip
Vaughn.
Alex Khvatov:
If you could have
dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
Chip Vaughn:
Dean Smith. I am a huge Carolina fan. Both of my parents
went there.
Alex Khvatov:
Finish
the sentence, Chip Vaughn is….
Chip Vaughn:
The best safety in the 2009 draft. Off-the-field, Chip is
an outstanding citizen. |
