Cameron Colvin Interview
 Wide Receiver - Oregon

By: Alex Khvatov

2/18/08

Alex Khvatov:  What is your height, weight and forty time?

Cameron ColvinI am 6'2", 210 and I ran 4.37 last spring.

Alex Khvatov:  What schools showed interest in you during the recruiting process coming out of California?

Cameron ColvinI had offers from almost every school in the country.  I was considered one of the top receivers in the nation along with Early Doucet.  USC, Michigan, Oregon, Miami, FL and Florida State all showed interest.

Alex Khvatov:  What made you choose Oregon?

Cameron ColvinWell, I had the opportunity to go to school with five of my best friends.  I had the chance to play against other powerhouses.  The distance also played a part in it.  I was a seventeen year old kid who wanted to stay closer to home.  My family never missed a game.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me a little bit about your family.

Cameron ColvinBoth of my parents are deceased.  My father passed away when I was six, and my mother passed away when I was fifteen.  My godfather stepped in and took me in.  He guided me throughout my career.  It was a blessing for me.  I never had a male figure in my life.

Alex Khvatov:  How disappointing was it to go down with an injury this season after it looked like you were poised to have that breakout senior campaign?

Cameron ColvinIt was unbelievably disappointing.  Everything was clicking.  I was finally having that season.  We were the team to beat in the country and we talked about it.  I was going to college to become a top wide receiver and it was happening.  The injury has motivated me and I am pushing myself to get to where I was before.  It was tough when it first happened.  But it is a blessing in the sky.  It makes you go that extra mile.

Alex Khvatov:  How is your recovery coming along?

Cameron ColvinThe recovery is going really well.  I am running and cutting four months after the surgery.  It is frustrating that your body feels different.  I couldn't even stand about a month and a half ago.  I was struggling to walk.  Now I am catching balls downfield and running routes.  I should be ready for my pro day.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you preparing for the draft?

Cameron ColvinThree weeks after my surgery, I got in the weight room and started to work on my strength.  Right now, I am down in Florida training with Dennis Mitchell who was a runner in the Olympics.  I am working on my speed.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your football career up to this point?

Cameron ColvinI think having to go to so many places and meeting so many people.  I played with Adrian Peterson and Early Doucet in the high school All-Star game.  I played against those guys in college.  Playing against Fresno State my sophomore year was a game that really stood out in my mind.  We were down by 14 points in the third quarter and we came from behind and won that game.  Our offense and our defense all made plays.  It showed the power that Oregon had.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your big performances against Stanford and Cal this year.

Cameron ColvinThose are the first opportunities that I had when the ball was coming my way.  I had to make the most of it.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe how you felt when you lost that fumble at the end of the Cal game when it looked like you were going to score the go-ahead touchdown.

Cameron ColvinOh man, it was tough.  I caught it and turned around to try to put the ball across the goal-line.  Looking at the game tape, I should have turned my body the other way.  He got a good hit.  He hit my elbow, and the ball came out.  No one was upset.  My teammates told me that we went to you in that situation because we were confident that you could make the play.  We were building off of it.  We were all professionals.  Still I got to make that play.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe the experience of playing for your head coach Mike Bellotti.

Cameron ColvinCoach Bellotti, I love the man.  He is an excellent coach.  He is a players' coach.  He challenges you.  He will push you till the very end until you show to him that you could contribute on the field.

Alex Khvatov:  Could you tell me about your teammate senior quarterback Dennis Dixon?

Cameron ColvinYeah, Dennis always had that capability.  He always had the talent, but he wasn't able to put it together.  He went to play baseball in the summer and he came back with new confidence.  He led us and played the way he had to play.  We weren't shocked by the way he played.   Then he went down with an injury, and our season collapsed.  It's fate for the Ducks.  We weren't meant to be this year.  That's football and that is the risk you take.  You have to take every opportunity and make the most of it.

Alex Khvatov:  What would you say to scouts and general managers that will question your lack of production on the field throughout your college career?

Cameron ColvinI think that I was productive when I was given the opportunity.  I made the most of my opportunities.  I can catch and block.  If you break down the film, I made plays for my team.  I broke my neck when I blocked for my running backs.  I worked hard even when I didn't get the ball.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Cameron ColvinGrowing up, it was always the Cowboys and the 49ers.  Those teams were winners during the 90's.  I grew up in the Bay Area and I loved watching Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders play.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite player?

Cameron ColvinUmm man, I am a Chad Johnson fan.  I just love his passion for the game.  He runs the sweetest routes and his quickness is impressive.  He just makes plays.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths on the football field?

Cameron Colvin:  I would say getting open and catching the ball.  I can read defenses really well.  The offense at Oregon challenged us to be able to read the opposing defense.  I block well down field for my running backs.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your weaknesses?

Cameron Colvin:  Umm, I don't come out of my routes as hard as I should.  I should be quicker in and out of them.  I need to be more disciplined in my route running.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the toughest player that you have faced during your career?

Cameron Colvin:  Marcus Walker is the best player that I have faced.  He is a friend of mine.  I played against him in the US Army All-American game in high school.  He shows a lot of patience on the field.  He doesn't take too many false steps.  It was fun playing against him because you have to work to get open.  He was one of the best.  I would compare him to someone like Al Harris.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best wide receiver that you have seen on the opposing team?

Cameron Colvin:  Last year, Paul Williams from Fresno State is a guy that could really jump.  DeSean Jackson played well against us this year.  His hand was injured and he still put together a good game.  He is a good receiver.  He can get open by using his speed.

Alex Khvatov:  Which underclassman on your team should we keep an eye on in the future?

Cameron Colvin:  Umm, I would say Patrick Chung, our safety.  He has a high motor.  His physical strength and speed are good.  He is very much like Bob Sanders.  He is always around the ball, making plays.  He should be the leader of the secondary next year.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about playing football?

Cameron Colvin:  Just the competition.  Just playing against the top guys and testing your ability.  I consider myself the cream of the crop even though my stats don't show that.  Just seeing how you could compete on the field.  I am going to make plays.  You can't be a faker out there.  You are not going to hide on the field, and your weaknesses will be exposed.

Alex Khvatov:  What are you going to have to do to make an NFL roster?

Cameron Colvin:  Just focus on my task at hand.  I am going to have to do the little things.  I will have to get in the film room and have someone mentor me.  Isaac Bruce helped Torry Holt in the beginning of his career.  Maurice Jones-Drew has said that Fred Taylor has helped him a lot.  I will have to stay focused and injury free.  I am getting a fresh start in the NFL.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Cameron Colvin:  I like cars.  I like Mustangs and other classic cars.  I put them together.  I have two Rottweilers that I hang out with.  I have to walk them and feed them.  I play X-Box 360 and Playstation 3 in my free time.  I like to play Madden and NBA 2K8 against my friends.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Cameron Colvin is:¦..

Cameron Colvin:  A really good person.  He strives to be the best at everything.  He is willing to work for everything that he is going to earn.
