Demetri McGill Interview

Demetri McGill – Defensive Tackle – Senior – East Carolina

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Demetri McGill:  I am 6’0, 290 and my forty time is a 5.2.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Demetri McGill:  I am training back at home at Virginia Beach.  I am training with one of the trainers from my high school days.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from you at the Pro Day?

Demetri McGill:  My Pro Day is on March 23rd.  I am expecting to run well and do good in the positional drills.  All 32 teams will be there.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about the Regional Combine that you participated in at the Redskins facility.

Demetri McGill:  It was on February 25th.  It went well.  It was a good experience.  I felt like I didn’t run too good in the forty, but everything else was good and crisp.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Demetri McGill:  I was getting interest from a lot of schools.  I originally committed to Maryland, but they reneged on my scholarship because of the previous injury I had.  They said that I needed surgery when I got here, but they wanted me to play right away.  The injury just healed naturally.  I also had UNC, Georgia and Florida, but they came late in the process.  I didn’t have a chance to build a relationship with them.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose East Carolina?

Demetri McGill:  I chose East Carolina because I had a good relationship with the coaches.  Ruffin McNeill was the first coach to call me when Maryland reneged on their offer.  I met good people.  It was a great environment.  People that I was around were good and genuine.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

Demetri McGill:  I played right away my freshman year.  I made Freshman All-Conference USA team.  My sophomore year, I had a senior in front of me.  I was a backup.  I took off my junior and senior years.  Individually, I was healthy and in the best shape of my life my junior year.  It was my best year.  I was plagued with injuries my senior year.  I missed two games.  I had an ankle fracture.  The best team that I experienced at East Carolina was during my freshman year.  We had a lot of mature guys.  They worked hard and got after it.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Demetri McGill:  Demanding a double team and attacking the gaps.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Demetri McGill:  Being able to get after the QB.  It’s tough to do it from a nose guard position, but I am trying to get better at it.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Demetri McGill:  Playing against Florida and South Carolina.  They are big SEC schools.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Demetri McGill:  The Eagles.  I always liked them.  When I was younger, I was a Falcons fan, but then I went with Philly because of Michael Vick.
Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Demetri McGill:  Michael Vick was my favorite player.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a DL?

Demetri McGill:  Being explosive and having good hand control.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Demetri McGill:  On the defensive side, it is DL Demage Bailey.  He has a good body.  He is about 6’5 and 290.  He is very athletic.  Jordan Williams is a good ILB.  CB Travon Simmons is a very smart player.  He knows where everybody is supposed to be.  DB Bobby Fulp is a big player.  He plays safety, CB and nickel for us.  WR Davon Grayson redshirted this year, but he should be back.  WR Travon Brown is very explosive.  He is a good possession receiver.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your former teammate WR Zay Jones.

Demetri McGill:  He is a player that works very hard.  No one outworks him.  He is even a better person.  Robert Jones is his dad.  He is a former Super Bowl winner.  He is a down to earth guy.  He works for everything.  He is not spoiled at all.  He doesn’t even have a car.  He is a very good guy.  He treats everybody with respect.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you faced during your career?

Demetri McGill:  Two running backs.  Mike Davis from South Carolina and South Florida’s Marlon Mack.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Demetri McGill:  I like contact.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Demetri McGill:  I like to play video games.  NBA2K, Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto.  I also collect shoes.  I have over 60 pairs.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Demetri McGill:  I want to pursue coaching or become a sports analyst on the NFL Network or ESPN.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Demetri McGill is….
