Michael James Interview

Michael James – Safety – Senior – Alderson Broaddus

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Michael James:  5’11, weight is 195 and the latest forty was a 4.6. We ran it in the fall.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Michael James:  I have been training at Ball-istic Sports with Kevin Johnson.  I played with his son in high school.  I also train with coach Steel at Athlete Addiction

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in
you?

Michael James:  Out of high school, my coaches tried to get college coaches to come.  I wasn’t a top recruit out of my high school and didn’t have the best grades.  When I put the highlight tape out there, I had some D-II and D-III.  I was late to get into college.  Alderson Broaddus was a first-year program.  I sent them the information about me.  They told me that I had to take the SAT.  I did, and I got a better score than I thought I would.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Alderson Broaddus?

Michael James:  It was a startup program.  I wanted to go to Sacramento State.  Shepherd was interested, but didn’t offer me.  Alderson Broaddus offered me.  That was the end of it.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about Alderson Broaddus in general.  Put your school on the map.

Michael James:  I was there when we transitioned from college to a university.  They joined schools.  We started football there.  We went from having 500 students to 1,200 students now.  The school just grew.  It is a good environment.  Coaches are very friendly.  They can relate to us.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall experience at the 2017 Tropical Bowl?

Michael James:  I had more of a chip on my shoulder.  Scouts have seen some D-I guys on TV.  I was wondering if they are looking at the small school guys.  I wasn’t very comfortable.  I wasn’t in my element on the field.  The coaching staff was still great.  They did a very good job putting us together.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about the National Bowl all-star game in Daytona Beach.

Michael James:  I had more fun at the National Bowl.  There were top players in our division.  I got comfortable so quickly. I was a leader on the team.

Alex Khvatov:  What did you want to show NFL teams during those all-star games?

Michael James:  I am a hard worker and relentless.  I don’t back down.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Michael James:  I am smart.  I know how to communicate.  If I get hurt, I will play through injuries.  I feel like nothing can stop me.  I can be a new player on the field, but I will automatically have to be a leader.  You can’t sit back on the field. You can’t be timid.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Michael James:  I want to get faster.  I need to read routes quicker.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career to us.

Michael James:  We came a long way.  We had a JV schedule my freshman year.  We got a rude awakening my sophomore year in D-II.  We were number one in the nation on defense this past year, then we dropped to No.5.  Our DB’s were the leaders of the team.  My strong safety and I had a strong bond.  We knew that we needed to challenge the defense to be best. I am the record holder in tackles and most INT’s at my school.  We go hard all the time.  We help everyone.  We are all battlers.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Michael James:  Being named an All-American multiple times.  I always started when I played.  Nobody I played with can say something bad about me.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Michael James:  San Diego Chargers.  My mom’s side of the family is from there.  I was born in San Diego.  My dad is a Steelers fan.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Michael James:  LaDainian Tomlinson is my favorite player.  Ed Reed was my favorite DB.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a safety?

Michael James:  Being mentally stable on the field.  Got to have heart and you got to have smarts.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next
season?

Michael James:  RB Brehon Daniels is a great athlete.  WR Oran Davis is a Juco transfer.  WR Braxton Johnson is coming back after his grades were messed up.  He was our top receiver as a sophomore.  QB Zach Chandler was a redshirt last year. He ran our scout team and tore it up.  Our other QB Connor McWilliams is also a good player.  Joseph Shelton at CB is fast and strong.  He can cover WR’s.  CB Da’Quan Lewis and DL Brandon Lavern.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Michael James:  I like how you can be in position to be the favorite or an underdog.  I like the thrill of the whole thing.  I love everything about the game.  Trash talking and physicality.  Football makes my heart rush.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Michael James:  I like being around family, playing cards and playing sports.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football
career is over?

Michael James:  Be a coach or use my criminal justice degree and try to do
security.  I want to open my own company in security.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest life lesson that you have learned so far?

Michael James:  Don’t follow the wrong crowd.  So many people around me had potential, but didn’t go in the right direction.

Alex Khvatov:  Who was the best player that you have faced during your career?

Michael James:  QB from Duquesne Dillon Buechel.  When he played, he could read our defense so well.  RB from Glenville State Tevin Drake.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Michael James is….

Michael James:  An achiever in every field of human endeavor.
