NEWLY INTRODUCED:  Discuss the latest draft happenings on the NFL Draft Blitz Message Boards

Top 10 Who Could Step Up This Year

By: Tony Conty

5/7/08

10.  Keiland Williams, RB-LSU

The bottom line is that Williams has the build to hold up over the span of 20 carries or so in a game.  He will have to step up because the Tigers have uncertainty at Quarterback and must become a threat on the ground in order to intimidate a deep set of SEC defenses.  Williams scored 6 TDs on only 70 carries last year and should nearly triple his number of touches with Jacob Hester gone.

9.  Lucas Miller, WR-Arkansas

Yet another team with question marks at the Quarterback position, Miller has the height, speed and leaping ability to take his game to the next level.  With Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis, Robert Johnson, Felix Jones and Marcus Monk gone, Casey Dick will have Miller as his go-guy.  Miller is underrated at this point and he has excellent hands.  If you haven't heard of him now, you will soon.

8. Herman Johnson, G-LSU

We at NFL Draft Blitz have discussed next year's Guard class as something special for some time now, and Johnson is the biggest and strongest of the bunch.  He will Duke it out with Duke Robinson to be the first Guard selected and Johnson's size and strength may be too much for teams to pass up.  Expect Johnson to ease the woes of a team attempting to protect an inexperienced Quarterback.

7.  Rey Maualuga, ILB-USC

The Linebacker class this year could be interesting to watch with Sean Lee out for the year already and gaining another year of eligibility.  Most people have James Laurinaitis leading the way, but no one has the size-speed ratio that Maualuga does.  He gets off blocks quickly and defends equally well against the inside and outside run.  Once the draft rolls around, Rey will wow them at workouts.

6.  Asaph Schwapp, FB-Notre Dame

How high will teams reach for a straight-ahead bulldozer of a blocking fullback? Schwapp will test that theory next year.  Schwapp had exactly 12 carries and 3 catches last year, but is such a good blocker that someone will give him a shot in the middle rounds of next year's draft.  At 6'0", 255 lbs., Schwapp is a force to be reckoned with and more than a legitimate prospect.

5.      Mike Mickens, CB-Cincinnati

If Mickens could add a little bulk, he would be right in the discussion of the Top Senior Cornerbacks with Malcolm Jenkins and Macho Harris.  Mickens flat-out makes plays and dominates at his level.  He had 6 Interceptions last year and ran two back for scores.  He is willing in run support, but it is their ball skills that will set him apart from the rest of the pack.

4.      John Parker Wilson, QB-Alabama

Wilson has lost two of his top receiving options in D. J. Hall and Keith Brown, but the rest of the team around him is gaining experience.  Wilson has great arm strength and made quite a few plays with his feet last year. (81 carries and 5 Touchdowns).  The SEC is primed for a changing of the guard, and Nick Saban's recruiting classes will start to pay dividends for Wilson next year as the talent around him will make him a better, NFL-ready Quarterback.

3.      John Pelusi, TE-Pittsburgh

Pelusi is an underrated pass-catching option at the Tight End position and will wow a lot of people with his ability as he steps up to replace Darrell Strong at the position.  He has more potential than anyone in the Big East at his position and will serve as an excellent outlet for a young QB in Pat Bostick and will take some attention away from #1 option Oderick Turner.

2.      Ryan Miller, C-LSU

As the Indianapolis Colts proved to us in this draft, quick Centers make formidable options as Guards in zone-blocking schemes.  Miller may be the strongest Center in his class and will be able to play Guard for a lot of teams.  If he is able to protect Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Lee and open holes in the running game, expect Miller to be a Day One selection.

1.  Lydon Murtha, T-Nebraska

On a line that will miss Carl Nicks this year and could see Andy Christensen as a, um, distraction, Murtha will in all likelihood be the leader of this unit.  Murtha has quick feet and gets to the second level easily.  Michael Oher, Phil Loadholt, and Alex Boone seem to be the top of this class, but don't be surprised to hear Murtha's name right after them.  He has a new line coach in Barney Cotton and will be one of 3 Seniors on this line.
